Inability To Store Food Stocks

Rajya Sabha in Delhi is concerned that food grains are rotting in Government Godowns and sub-standard food grains are being supplied to the tribals in many parts of the country. Mrs.Brinda Karat, CPI leader raised this issue in the Rajya Sabha and lamented that the Government was not listening to the demand for distributing food grains among the poor while allowing them to rot in Godowns. While entire House shared her feelings alongwith the Dy.Chairman, Sri K.Rahman Khan, the nominated member Sri A.K.Ganguley exclaimed, “country is sitting on a Grain Bomb” as the good monsoon was expected to result in a record wheet output of 82 million tonnes in the current season while storing capacity was very low. It was revealed that the country needed extra storage capacity of 1.5 lakh tonnes while only 1% construction of warehouses was completed last year. The whole House jointly expressed a concern “Let us not convert the fortune of plenty into a calamity”.

What to talk of this country's policy makers and executing agencies? Planning Commission with its big paraphernalia is unable to guide the ministries and the latter are adament in their inimical style and inefficient execution of schemes with the result productivity is not keeping pace with the worlds' best or even the average and while the production is more thanks to good monsoon our friends are not in a position to store the food stocks either. What an anamalous situation in the country? Who has got the time and the guts to execute such useful and utilaterian scheme without further delay?

Manmohan Singh & Digvijay Singh

Dr Manmohan Singh & Mr. Digvijay Singh are great personalities. The former is the sitting P.M of this country while the latter was the longest -serving C. M of the Madhya Pradesh State so far. He had expressed a desire on Sunday, March 27, 2011 at Bhopal that Mr Rahul Gandhi should become the P.M of this country. One remembers a similar sentiment expressed by the late Congress leader Mr Arjun Singh in early eighties first about Mr Sanjay Gandhi and later his brother Mr Rajiv Gandhi which materialised ultimately. Rahul is going to be the P.M very soon, nobody can deny as long as Congress is in power.

Digvijay Singh has praised Dr Manmohan Singh for his courage to put his cabinet colleague behind the bars. Every body knows the person or institution responsible for the arrest of Mr A.Raja. He is particularly appreciative of PM's action because he (as the CM )himself saved two of his ministerial colleagues from charge-sheet and prosecution despite strong recommendations from Lokayukta of M.P State. He indirectly meant to convey that he wouldn't have done so but protected Raja at any cost.

Florida Keys and Key West (USA)

Key West is a group of 108 islands located in a row in the Southern Florida. Overseas High Way No.1 connects these islands with Miami International Airport. It has grown into an international tourist Center with a number of shopping malls, hotels, restaurants, gift shops, boats, boat houses and apartments. Battery-driven trains with some 4 – 5 decorated coaches are found plying and carrying pleasure-loving tourists on roads around the beaches that are well-developed, lined and paved in proper Key West Town. All the keys have otherwise been fully developed, connected and facilities provided for T.V channels / connections, reliable internet connectivity, gas supplies, potable and drinking water near homes, hotels and roads. Some of the famous keys are as follows:

Key Largo, the Dive Capital of the world

Islamorada, the Sport Fishing capital of the World

Marathon, a Town in the Heart of the Keys

Lower Keys, A Natural escape

Key West, the Uncommon Place.

The Marathon (the place where I stayed) Airport is nearly 110 miles and Key West airport is 158 miles south of Miami.

Andaman & Nicobar islands of India in South Asia can also be developed like Florida State ( Sun shine State) with spots equivalent to Miami, Key West and Singapore.

The Butchart Gardens:

Over 100 years in Bloom -- open every day of the year

When Robert and Jennie Butchart came to live at Tod Inlet on Vancouver Island (Canada) they named their home “Benvenuto” (welcome in Italian). With great vision, Jennie transformed the barren limestone quarry (excavated to supply the cement factory owned by her husband nearby). Now 22 hectares of breathtaking gardens on the 53 hectare estate are visited by close to a million people each year. In 2004 during 100th anniversary, the Butchart Gardens, still family owned, was designated a National Historic Site of Canada. The Gardens , through the skilled mixture of rare and exotic shrubs, trees and flowers, often collected by the Butcharts during their extensive world travels, continually expanded over the years to become the world famous Sunken, Japanese, Rose, Italian and Mediterranean gardens.

War of Sops between DMK and AIADMK

Two major political parties in Tamil Nadu, namely, DMK and AIADMK have announced their manifestoes on the eve of General Elections to the State Assembly scheduled for polling on April 13, 2011. DMK is known for such populist manifesto since its very first successful electoral battle in 1967 with Mr C.N.Annadurai, as its leader with a slogan of one rupee a kilo(measure) rice to the public. With every successive election the manifesto list kept on increasing with 2006 elections blatantly announcing too many sops alluring voters and succeeding in the end. Mr Karunanidhi and his ministry tried their best to fulfill those promises as far as possible. That had probably goaded the opposition party leader Ms Jeyalalitha too to announce a similar package with a vengeance. She can't be blamed for that. Since the majority of voters going to the booths are from lower middle and deprived sections of the society and they have no hesitation to accept the offer, the battle would remain otherwise incomplete without a level-playing field. Now however the point remains whether it is a good development for a mature democracy like India and that too with such an educated electorate in Tamil Nadu.

It reflects the general trend getting set over a period of time. The public knows that the rulers are not angels from heaven and they are not going to serve as Harischandras after spending so much in the hoostings and the system in the political partiews are not going to ensure clean and honest candidates as peoples representatives in the absence of money power. So they are complacent with whatever money comes on their way and whichever candidates are fielded by the political parties.

The moot point for one to ponder is whether the Indian electoral system would ensure that a limited number of proven parties alone are allowed to participate in the battle and the elections are funded by the state and also the political perties would in turn allow democracy within the party and choose candidates by selection not on the basis of money power, mussle power or family connections.

Hope for the best in the years to come!!

Land Grabbing by the Corporates

A news item from Gandhi Nagar, Capital of Gujarat State reports that over 250 women were protesting against the upcoming Cement Plant of Nirma Limited in Bhavnagar District and got detained by Police on Friday, March, 18th, 2011. The women were reportedly marching towards the State Assembly in Gandhinagar.

Nirma Limited is building a cement plant with a capacity of 1.91 million tonnes per annum, alongwith its captive power and coke oven plant, near Padhiarka village in Mahuva Taluka of Bhavnagar District. The protesting women alleged that the proposed plant was being built on a natural water body and the proposed cement plant would destroy their agricultural and animal husbandary practices besides causing irreparable damage to the environment.
The said report has however failed to mention the reaction of the political leaders in the State including the Chief Minister who is known for his development goal. India needs development and Vibrant Gujarat intends to attract huge investments from the Corporate Sector.

The hapless citizens and poor farmers are forced to sacrifice their homelands and hearths for the sake of such development. It is a bit disturbing to note that the women folk of Bhavnagar district is forced to take up cudgels with the powerful state government headed by Shri Narendra Modi. As a citizen and well wisher of progressive-minded Chief Minister, one would expect him to strike a balance between development and environment keeping the feelings and aspirations of the poor villagers especially the women folk in mind.

"Railway Built of Gold"

The White Pass & Yukon Route (WP&YR) was designated an International Historic Civil Engineering Landmark in 1994. It is an honor shared with other world civil engineering marvels such as the Eiffel Tower, Statue of Liberty and the Panama Canal. The WP&YR is recognized for the many difficult and hazardous obstacles that construction overcame: design challenges, Granite Mountains, steep grades, cliff hanging turns and unimaginable weather conditions. The rush for riches was actually predicted by Skagway founder, Captain William Moore

The headline “Gold! Gold! Gold!’ of the Seattle Post Intelligencer on July 17, 1897 broadcast the news of the discovery of gold in the Canadian Klondike. It reported that “ Sixty Eight Rich Men on the Steamer Portland” arrived in Seattle with “Stacks of Yellow Metal”.

Both the Chilkoot Trail and the White Pass Trail were filled with hazards and harrowing experiences. Three thousand horses died on the White Pass Trail. The WP&YR climbs from sea level in Skagway to almost 3000 ft at the summit in just 20 miles. On May 28, 1898 construction began on the narrow gauge railroad. The workers reached the Summit of White Pass on February 20, 1899. During construction 35,000 men worked and 35 lost their lives. Close Brothers of London, under the leadership of W.B Close spent $10,000,000 on construction of the railroad. The Klondike has gone from the gold mining operations of the first stampeders to carry significant amounts of ore and concentrates to Skagway to be loaded upon ore ships.

One hundred thousand men and women headed north, but only 30,000 or 40,000 actually reached the gold fields of Klondike. Four thousand or so prospectors found the gold but only a few hundred became rich. By October 1897, according to Northwest Mounted Police Report, Skagway “had grown from a concourse of tents to a fair-sized town with well-laid- out streets and numerous frame buildings, stores, saloons, gambling houses, dance houses and a population of about 20,000. After following the ‘Container Route on ship, train and truck in 1955 for survival, the WP&YR has now reinvented itself as a tourist attraction for a tourism market since 1988.

Hide & Seek with the Moon

Look at sister, the full & white Moon seen in the East When my father Sun wound up his work on the West Moon and I (brother) played a game of hide and seek When our bus was on its way towards South to Utah

A long mountain range was on my left along the road Moon in full bloom size kept hiding again and again Many a cliff enabled her to hide face once or twice I was spotting / yelling but she didn’t fail to follow

Bridges pass away between me & her many a time My beautiful sister was not shy but kept her pace Her appearance lighted up the ground around me Cars and other speed vehicles fly past on the left side

But my sister’s pace & motion left me wondering Clouds too provided her a shelter now and then again I admire her dexterity and strength of character True the moon gets her brightness from Father Sun

Her grace & attraction drawn from my mother earth Her usual and routine style a lesson to me and others I pray to Father to make me too a star in his system I wish & long for her company for ages yet to come.

Yellowstone (USA)

Surface water seeps underground, is heated by a deep source of mama and rises as superheated water. Geysers occur when underground constrictions increase the pressure of the water until it finally erupts. Hot springs have no constrictions, so water rises, cools and sinks. The small amount of water in fumaroles flashes into steam before reaching the surface. Mudpots are acidic hot springs with limited water. The acid and microorganisms decompose surrounding rock into clay and mud. A main route to Old Faithful is from the south by way of Jackson, Wyo.,`and the South entrance. The park road crosses the continental Divide three times; waters flow east of it to the Atlantic Ocean or West to the Pacific Ocean. This route passes five geyser basins -- West Thumb, Upper (old Faithful), Midway, Lower and Norris – on the way to Mammoth Hot Springs. Sampling the world’s largest concentration of geysers you follow the Firehole and Gibbon rivers. A visitor Center at Old Faithful and museums at Norris tell aspects of the park’s stories.

Old faithful Geyser is the world’s best known geyser. Its eruption intervals have varied from 40 to 126 minutes. At Biscuit Basin mineral deposits took biscuit shapes, but an earthquake in 1959 triggered changes destroying the biscuits. At Midway Geyser Basin you may walk to Excelsior Geyser Crater and Grand Prismatic Spring. Firehole Lake Drive (one way north-bound) loops off the main road to Great, Fountain Geyser, Firehole Lake and a variety of hot pools . Lower Geyser Basin features Fountain Paint pot. Firehole canyon Drive (one way loop, southbound), starting south of Madison Junction, passes Firehole Falls. Roadside forests are mainly lodgepole pine. Some areas were burned in by wildfire in 1988. Norris Geyser Basin’s array of thermal features is unparalleled. Steamboat Geyser, the world’s tallest, erupts at irregular intervals of days to years. Porcelain Basin is the park’s hottest exposed area. Two miles south of Mammoth Hot Springs the Upper Terrace Drive passes through a thermal area. Gnarled limber pines on some dormant formations are over 500 years old. At mammoth Hot Springs the travertine (calcium carbonate) forms spectacular terraces. Yellowstone Lake is North America’s largest mountain lake. It now drains into the Atlantic via the Gulf of Mexico. The lake is 20 miles long, 14 miles wide and 430 feet deep at its deepest point. Swimming is discouraged even where not prohibited; such cold waters can cause potentially fatal hypothermia or hyperventilation within mere minutes.

West Thumb and Grant Village: Walk the board walk through the geyser basin at lake’s edge at West Thumb. Intense heat measured in lake sediments below West Thumb indicates a shallow thermal system underlying this more recent caldera within the Yellowstone caldera.

Creating Giants in the Black Hills

A Shrine in the Black Hills had been rightly defended and created by Gutzon Borglum. His vision for Mount Rushmore was no less than “the formal rendering of the philosophy of our government into granite on a mountain peak”. His monument to America comprised the massive busts of four leaders: George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt. Borglum created and upheld the unity and integrity of the nation at a cost of $ 1 million (83 per cent was federal money) in 14 years (1927- 1941).

The carving of George Washington‘s head is as tall as a six-story building:
Forehead to chin – 60 ft
Width of eye – 11 feet
Length of nose – 20 ft
Width of mouth – 16 ft

Bear Country U.S.A (Wildlife Park)

This is the Playground of wild-life in mini forest. Bear Country U.S.A (www.bearcountryusa.com) is open daily late April to late November peak season. It is 8 miles south of Rapid City (South Dakota) on Highway 16, the Road to Rushmore. It is a pet friendly facility.

Since 1972 visitors have been enjoying this unique and spectacular wildlife park. It features many species of North American animals, including the largest privately owned collection of American Black Bear.

One can observe mountain lions, wolves, elks, bobcats, buffalos, reindeers and other wildlife from the comfort of your own vehicle (including 55-seater buses). The animals roam freely in 250 acres of natural Black Hills habitat. The exciting, enjoyable and educational encounters with 25 different species (including Rocky Mt. goat, Dall sheep, Big Horn sheep, Arctic wolves, Black bear and Timber wolves) one experiences would certainly last a lifetime.

Although it may give an impression of a zoo for us, it is much more rewarding for the money one spends here for animal sighting compared to a similar effort in any Indian wildlife park. Private initiative in this regard is indeed praise-worthy.

The Bear’s Den, a remarkable 6000 square-foot gift shop, is one of the most unique and gifted ones in the Black Hills. Many wildlife treasures and gifts are available to visitors who love animals, nature and the great outdoors.

Baby land: After the drive-through tour, one can walk around Baby land where young and smaller animals including their famous grizzly bears frolic in the outdoors.

Crazy Horse Memorial

World’s largest Mountain-carving in progress on Black Hills of South Dakota (USA)

Man’s ambition finds no bounds. It is very true of a sculptor called Korczak Ziolkowski (a polish American orphaned at the age of one but determined to fulfill the mission handed out to him by the Lakota Chief Henry Standing Bear for a mountain carving in honour of the North American Indian esp. a Native Hero called Crazy Horse in Black Hills of South Dakota.

History of the Hero as written by the Sculptor:

Crazy Horse was born on Rapid Creek in the Black Hills in 1842. He defended his people and their way of life in the only manner he knew. While at Fort Robinson, Nebraska, under a flag of truce, he was stabbed in the back by an American soldier due to which he died September 6, 1877 at the age of 35. The treaty of 1868 signed by the President of the United States was not acted upon. In fact the said treaty promised meat, clothing, tents and necessities for existence which they were to receive for having given up their lands and gone to live on the reservations. To a derisive question raised by a white man “Where are your lands now?” he seems to have thrown out his left hand pointing and replying with the words, “ My lands are where my dead (brethren) lie buried” as shown in the scale model and in the work progressing accordingly.

Korczak started the project in the year 1948 with only $174 in his pocket at the age of 40. Over the years he battled financial hardship, racial prejudice, injuries and advancing age. A strong believer in the free enterprise system, Korczak felt Crazy Horse should be built by the interested public and not the tax payer. What a Himalayan wish and vow on the part of a single family to accomplish such a big gigantic project – the largest mountain carving undertaken so far in the world? Since his death in 1982 his wife Ruth and their children continue to see exciting progress being made with each passing year. Workers are now (in 2010) blocking out the 22 storey-high horse’s head. The painted outline shows the 45 –foot ear and the 16 foot-wide eye, some 260 feet below the head of Crazy Horse.

Visit to Cheyenne town, the Capitol of Wyoming State

As the tourists my spouse and I had visited Cheyenne town and seen the capitol building - both outside and from inside: It is constructed with beautiful architecture, valuable materials and fantastically-designed furniture kept inside. Central Dome, Senate and Assembly chambers are worth seeing and fit to be replicated elsewhere. I had seen earlier the Assembly Hall of Madhya Pradesh at Bhopal and I am now reading a lot about and seeing few photographs of the newly-inaugurated Assembly Hall and the Secretariat of Tamil Nadu Government in Chennai. These are no match to Wyoming State Capitol building. Had the C.M of Tamil Nadu seen some of the newly-built capitols in USA, I am sure he would have come with some better blue-prints.

Drive through the Wyoming ranches for miles together is a sight unforgettable indeed. Extensive and graceful grass fields with man-made fencing here and there by the owners are simply awesome and not to be seen in countries like India.
